A good question from a reader that may be of general interest ... and an answer.
Q: Just wondered ... would the fertile Alder Island female students normally carry on having sex with The Endowed once they fell pregnant or would they stop at that point having achieved their "goal?" Or would it be more a case of those who still wished to, purely for sexual gratification, carrying on? If it was the latter then surely that would just encourage the fertile females to adopt somewhat whorish habits ... and if it was the former, then one would presume The Endowed, given their high success rate, would be "in limbo" at some point with no students left to impregnate.
A: Well, remember that participation is entirely voluntary for girls (and women--the Endowed also serve other women there).
Due to The Rule, their services are on offer for any woman who asks, pregnant or not ... some women like sex while they're pregnant, while others prefer to avoid it. It's up to them. The other part of the Rule is that they can't force themselves on any girl (or woman) who doesn't desire the service. Some individuals might feel that it's whorish, while others see nothing wrong with it. Remember, too, that even a fertile female doesn't necessarily conceive every time she has sex with a fertile male.
Due to the Rule, they can't refuse sterile women either, such as Holly and Janine, or women past the age of childbearing, who may participate purely for pleasure if they wish. And there are are yet other women who live on the island without constantly having babies ... Vonda being an example, who was faithful to her sterile husband for as long as he lived, and Merilee, who had only two children; both are fertile, but both stopped bearing by choice, and that's okay. So long as they contribute to building up the community in one way or another, steriles or celibates-by-choice, too, are entirely welcome, and not excluded or looked down upon.
The female students are divided into three groups ... one served in school from September through November, one from December through mid-March, and the third from mid-March to mid-June. Of course, any student can also avail herself of service outside of school if she wishes.
Some women prefer not to use the Endowed at all and simply stick with their own men--remember, the island attracts fertile males, too, and the average fertility of men there is around 30%, three times higher than the national average. Fertile but non-Endowed men also go there to have offspring. Due to its clinics, which are very advanced in dealing with all matters concerning fertility, pregnancy, and childbirth, it's very probably the best place to have a baby in the world. Many couples from other places go there simply to use the clinicians' expertise, and have nothing to do with the Endowed or the island sex culture at all.
So, with students being broken up into groups, and a large number of transient adult women on the island temporarily, for a day, a week, or a month or three, and steriles also, there's seldom any lack of business for them. As far as judgments about the formation of immoral habits go, well, of course there is talk and feeling and gossip ... get three or more women together anyplace and there will be that. Many citizens feel that the fertility crisis is so dire that questions of morality don't apply to people capable of producing ... though others don't share that judgement. We have already met at least one of the latter, with more on the way.
